Why We Say "Movie" Instead of "Film" (Yes, We're Serious)

We don’t say "film" here. Not because we don’t love the craft and art of cinema, but because the word "film" feels like it comes with a tuxedo. It implies something elevated. Clean. Academic. Safe.
We don’t do safe. We do weird. We do personal. We do obsessed.
To us, "movie" just feels more honest. It’s the vibe of your favorite snack on your lap and the flick you wanna watch on the TV - Not cause it’s “art”, but because it’s just what you like!
Calling it a movie instead of a film is a way of saying: “This mattered to me, not to a panel. It hit me in the chest, not in the Art School syllabus.”
It doesn’t have to come with a thesis to be powerful… Did you like the movie? Did it speak to you? Good. That’s all that matters.
And if you find yourself not caring for a “highly respected film” - Well, good to that, too! I would always rather hear your actual opinion instead of, “engage in discourse about the film’s commentary on post-industrial alienation.” - Fuck. Put me to bed, please, and never show me another movie again.
We say "movie" because it sounds like something you'd fall in love with by accident. It’s something you'd put on with your friends, be surprised by, and then find yourself thinking about ten years later.
A movie you love is something you don’t have to defend to anybody, but would anyway.
We are not at war with the word “film”, we just prefer “movie” because it’s more chill. It’s relaxed. We want to know what you actually thought of something, not how it would be talked about in a classroom.

Cult Movies and Punk Rock: A Match Made in D.I.Y.

There’s a reason punks love cult movies, and it’s so much more than just the weird themes, images, and stories. Cult movies and punk rock share an ethic of making something out of nothing... Refusing to wait for permission, pouring every drop of yourself into a vision, and not caring that *maybe* nobody else will understand.
Take Eraserhead. David Lynch worked on that movie for five years. He funded it with odd jobs and literally dead-bolted him and his crew on set every night so they couldn't get kicked out. It was only made because Lynch refused to let it die, and he wasn't compromising for anything. It was a movie that nobody else could have made, and nobody asked for either - But shit, aren't we all so glad he didn't give up? That kind of dedication is PURE punk rock... full throttle, against the odds, no safety net, deep conviction, and total dedication.
Or look at something like Repo Man or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Both of those were made on shoestring budgets, outside the studio system, with no guarantees and plenty of obstacles. But you know what? They still became iconic! That's not because they were polished, but because they were fearless.
Punk bands record demos in apartment bathrooms and hit the road for a month-long tour in a van that probably only has about 2 weeks of life in it. Cult filmmakers shoot in borrowed spaces and cut their reels in their kitchens. It’s the same ethos: do it yourself, because no one else is going to do it for you. And when it works? It doesn’t just resonate. It explodes.
What makes both punk rock and cult cinema so inspiring isn’t just that they exist outside the mainstream, but that they exist because of people who believed in their ideas more than their comfort. People who knew it might not sell, might not land, might not be understood… But still had to make it anyway.
That kind of passion is contagious, and it’s what fuels Cult of Cult. We want to celebrate all of the weirdos who made something amazing and beautiful with no plan B, and no interest in playing it safe. Cult Movies. Punk Rock. D.I.Y Forever.
