Raising Arizona

[[Clips of Cobb’s role interspersed]]

Joel Coen famously referred to Randall “Tex” Cobb as “a force of nature” and said he wouldn’t rush to work with him again on any future projects. Cobb wasn’t a method actor, and he certainly wasn’t full of his own ideas about the script, like his co-star Nic Cage. No, Cobb was a boxer and martial artist famous for his “chin”, his ability to take hits without going down. He couldn’t ride a motorcycle, he couldn’t remember his lines, and his manager strong-armed the Coens into doubling Cobb’s rate when they needed him for further shoots.

What Cobb could do, however, was deliver the perfect ‘heavy’ performance, an anchor of malice in the otherwise slapstick criminal world of Raising Arizona. Not just a force of nature, Leonard Smalls is a chewed-up-cigar of a man, tossed aside on a desert highway and left to set fire to anything living there.

While he may have met a fitting end on-screen, the Cult has brought Leonard back to life for his latest run. Just keep him away from the wildlife.

Somewhere along the way of shooting fight scenes for weeks at a time, Nic Cage got very into astronomy as a way to relax and take advantage of the clear Arizona sky, and he spent so much time looking through his telescope he had brought on set that he hurt his back and couldn’t get out of bed. At least he can take a load off here.

Who would’ve guessed that the perfect launching pad for the sprawling, manic career of Nic Cage would be a lawn chair? If you’d rather remember the good ol’ days, the salad days, we’ve got you covered.

Maybe your Mama didn’t love you, but we do. Thanks for watchin.
